Questionable Loyalties

Ariel Millerton has worked for the government as a sniper/assassin for well over a decade. But a serious case of burnout, has left her with an obvious disconnect to the human race that she can no longer abide. She knows that she's walking a fine line between sanity and a complete breakdown, and as such, she makes the decision to retire while her sanity is still intact.

Nate Dresher is Ariel ex-boss, and while he understands her reluctance to continue in her work, he can't bring himself to take her off of active status, even after receiving her resignation. Instead he's put her on a temporary leave of absence ... but fails to inform Ariel.

When the opportunity comes to get "the one that got away" Nate pulls a fast one, and drags Ariel back into their old team for a mission she wants nothing to do with, but feels obligated to help resolve despite her distaste for things likely to come.

Ariel's relationship with Nate has always been somewhat ambiguous; a combination of annoyance, respect, independence and sexual tension. But now that she isn't really Nate's employee and she has no intention of any permanent return to her previous employment, she and Nate are open to pursue not only their target, but also one another.

As things begin to unfold it becomes obvious that the case in question has more layers than anyone ever could have suspected at first glance. But with Ariel's patience being tried at every juncture, and her unwillingness to ignore what she considers to be her duty, will the twists and turns ahead of them finally push Ariel over the edge?
